Bass player Tim Atkinson invited us to design an identity and for Leader of Down’s albums – Cascade into Chaos and The Screwtape Letters. Dan Luckin painted the album artworks featuring the band’s ‘weredog’ character in an homage to 80’s metal, punk and reggae covers. We designed a band monogram and created hand-painted typography. The Cascade into Chaos CD booklet makes use of Tim and Würzel’s rich archive of previously unpublished photos and ephemera stretching back to Würzel’s time in Motörhead. We collaged the material around band lyrics and painted elements. The Screwtape Letters uses pen and ink graphics. Both albums were released by Cleopatra Records on CD and coloured vinyl.
Leader of Down
Leader of Down are a UK rock band formed by Motörhead guitarist Würzel and bass player Tim Atkinson. Following Würzel’s untimely death friends of the band were recruited to complete the first album including Whitfield Crane (Ugly Kid Joe), Bruce Foxton (The Jam) with Lemmy and Phil Campbell of Motörhead.
