In 2019 Apropos- was invited by Bedford Creative Arts to design the identity for a community project based in Bedford’s Queen’s Park. BCA initially appointed 3 artists to work with the community – Caroline Wendling investigated the idea of place through memories. Andy Holden and Mira Calix planned to collaborate on a sound work – We Are Heard – conjuring the ambient sounds of Queen’s Park. Originally conceived as a series of workshops and events before the pandemic forced a re-think.
During the first lock-down we designed a series of worksheets with the artists, which along with art materials were distributed as art packs to 1,500 homes in the Queen’s Park area. In the second lock-down the project moved online as a series of creative video tutorials under the Make & Share banner. We designed film titles and a social media campaign of short animations to support each film. At the end of the project we produced a 20 page report summarising the 4 year project, it’s evolution and achievements. The design follows our original visual language created to launch the programme, mixing photography, hand drawn and cut-out elements in an informal collage style.
The project was co-produced by Bedford Creative Arts and The Higgins Bedford art gallery. It was funded by The Paul Hamlyn Foundation, The Harpur Trust, Arts Council England, BPHA, National Lottery Community Fund, Royal Opera House Bridge, and Arnold Clark Community Fund.
