The Curwen Studio 06.05.10

The Curwen Studio is an artist’s print studio, which has been creating limited editions since 1958. Artist’s have included Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Graham Sutherland, Elisabeth Frink, Edward Bawden, Paula Rego, David Gentleman, Angie Lewin, Mark Hearld … and Rolf Harris (I love Rolf Harris). A wide variety of print techniques is on offer including zinc plate and limestone lithography, photographic contone and mono printing. The Studio relocated from Central London to the Chilford Hall estate, close to Cambridge, in 1989.

The studio is open to anyone. It’s a very informal atmosphere. Yesterday was spent proofing – printing 30 versions of different colour intensities. At the end we chose which versions to follow for the final edition.

The process is a collaboration with Michael the printer – he created the screens from my indian ink drawings on tracing paper. He operates the press and mixes the colours for each plate. I painted directly onto the blue screen with developer paste. Thanks to Jenny & Michael.

This is the view from our studio of the High St – a combination of various sketches produced over the past year.
