On Monday July 7th the Tour de France will be passing through Saffron Walden on its way from Cambridge to London. To commemorate the event we have created a special edition of our Light Traffic Only cups and tea towels. They can be purchased from our online store Apropos-Shop or in person and online from the Design Essentials shop on Market Hill in Saffron Walden, who are the exclusive stockists. The china cups were made by McLaggan Smith and the tea towels are 100% premium cotton. Both products made in Britain.
The design builds on our original black on white design. I travelled the route of the tour photographing individual village names on black and white sign posts. These historic signs are slowly disappearing and falling into disrepair. Occasionally locals take it on themselves to fix them up and the results can be somewhat less than professional but this all adds to the idiosyncratic charm and vernacular of the English countryside. We have included some key rider names hidden amongst the villages. For more info you can listen to me talking with Sue Dougan about the project on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire (first 30 mins).
