Mark Leckey at Tate Britain 10.10.19

O’ Magic Power of Bleakness recreates the underside of a motorway bridge from the M53 in Merseyside, close to where Mark Leckey grew up. The concrete-like MDF architecture with sloping walls and near total darkness looms above and surrounds the audience.

Leckey’s films Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore (1999) and Dream English Kid 1964-99 AD (2015) play on floor to ceiling projections. A series of oversized iPhone format screens play out an autobiographical ghost story as if recorded by a group of teenagers. Themes – popular culture, technology, youth, class, memory and nostalgia.
