Whitney McVeigh at Kettle’s Yard 15.05.15

Whitney McVeigh’s show in St. Peter’s Church adjacent to Kettle’s Yard is a collection of objects which include stacks of books, drawings, cards, photographs and letters; bottles and storage containers; games and toys; a typewriter; a clock; leaves and stones. The materials are old and worn, their condition alludes to past lives and broader social/historical contexts. While the objects are personal to the artist, collected for unspecified reasons, they are familiar and commonplace. We each accumulate objects through our lives and keep them with us for a wide variety of reasons… holiday souvenirs, junk shop finds, sentimental gifts and tokens. We project meanings on to them, often beyond their original purpose, and these choices in turn reveal something about us.
