Sheep’s head maquette 13.09.09

The local museum is holding a small Henry Moore exhibition. A show of his sheep etchings, sketches and a couple of sculptures. One room – very small. Excuse the poor quality photo – no flash allowed. I’m not a big sheep fan… the drawings are ok but I’ve seen better (just my opinion). What’s really interesting to me is the way he picked up objects – a bit of flint, the bones from his chicken dinner, or this section of sheep skull, which he used as the basis for a sculpture. Why try and recreate nature when you can use it directly? He then added sections of plaster to smooth a shape or simplify it… but usually just to finish off what occurs naturally. It’s the simplest route to the desired result.
