Afternoon in the National Gallery killing time before meeting with Ilsa Parry. The Hoerengracht is a re-creation of a street in the Red Light District of Amsterdam. Made by Ed and Nancy by Kienholz in the 1980’s. The brick buildings and windows appear to run with water. Prostitute mannequins are lit by red bulbs and sit behind glass – open frames accentuate their dead pan faces adding to the impression that the figures are on display or open for business. Feels very like Madame Tussaud’s or the London Dungeon. Almost expect the models to move, like bad end of the pier animatronics in a haunted house show.
