John Grant played The Junction in Cambridge last night. The show was a sell-out. He still hasn’t got his laptop back, stolen from the stage at his Brighton gig on thursday night. “I guess you’ll be seeing pictures of my dick soon – I don’t mind”.
Fantastic sound from the icelandic band – 2 keyboard players, drummer, bass and guitar player. Grant himself plays a lot keyboards. The band made a powerful sound, lots of synthesizer and heavy bass tones “did you fee it in your balls” he says after Pale Green Ghosts.
At an educated guess I’d say the crowd were broadly middle aged, middle-class, some students and couples. A big and vocal gay support, many in impressive steam-punk finery. Grant talks to the audience and they talk back in a very natural way. Despite the subject matter of his songs he exudes a laconic confidence and genuine charisma. He talked about his HIV status, relationships, upbringing and bullying by his family… all heavy subjects but dealt with in the context of his songs and always with very funny asides.
